Surf Research/Information

Research & Consulting

I’ve been moonlighting as a researcher and consultant since 2001, providing surf-related information to writers, journalists, editors, surfwear companies, filmmakers and TV producers. The databases I created for the Encyclopedia of Surfing are an amazing and totally one-of-a-kind research tool. The “main library” database has over 18,000 detailed records on surf magazine articles dating from 1960 to present day, as well as hundreds of articles from Time, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, Outside, and other general-interest sources. I can search for articles by keyword (“Dora,” “Pipeline,” “twin-fin,” “localism,” “World Championships” “Lightning Bolt,” etc), or by author, date, and magazine title. My magazine archive includes complete sets of Surfer, Surfing, Surfer’s Journal, Longboard, Surfing Girl, Australia’s Surfing Life, Surf Guide, Surfing Illustrated, Wahine, Deep, Petersen’s Surfing, Surf Life for Women, Pacific Longboard, and The Surf Report. Other databases are dedicated to surf contest results (1920s to present day), surf cinema (movies, videos, DVDs, television; over 1,300 titles), and surf-world contact information. The databases are updated constantly. My surfing library also contains hundreds of non-databased books.

Pricing

Pricing for research projects is done case-by-case, but the minimum charge for a simple database search, no photocopying, is $75. Because most projects involve multiple searches, photocopying, packaging and mailing, the price is usually higher. A documentary filmmaker paid $500 for a three-ring binder on Jeff Hakman containing photocopied magazine articles and ads, competition results, surf-movie appearance, and contact information for a half-dozen surf-moviemakers. Writer Patrick Moser paid $300 for an article-only search/copy on Shaun Tomson. HBO paid $250 for a search/copy on Dorian Paskowitz. The amount of material on a given research subject is usually the biggest determiner for price.

Projects are usually turned around in less than three days, and I can often provide same-day service.
